Think Like A Coach, Not A Manager
Being a manager who is in charge of others and is in charge of the quality of those individuals' performance can be a very difficult and stressful task. There are a lot of different things you can do to help you become a more effective leader. One of the best tips for improving leadership skills is to take a step back, examine your mindset, and change the way you think. Perhaps what you really need is to start thinking like a coach instead of thinking like a boss.
There are a lot of differences between a coach and a boss, even though they may seem similar. The term manager or boss is often looked down upon, where as the term coach is not. This is because the word boss carries the negative connotation as a word that describes someone who likes to be pushy and more or less just pushes others around. This is not the job description of a coach. A coach is someone who loves what they do and has mastered their art and craft.
A coach has a passion for what he does and knows what it takes in order to put together a winning team. Coaches are in charge of training players and equipping them with the skills and techniques they need in order to put forth their best performance. This means one of the keys to your success is to know the weaknesses and strengths of your team, both corporately and individually.
You should make sure that you develop a training plan that will help develop your team's strengths and capitalize on them. This also means that you take the time to evaluate the weaknesses of your team individually and work towards improving those skills. By developing the skills that lack, you will improve your team's overall performance and boost team morale.
Another important part of learning how to think like a coach is to develop a relationship with the players on your team. Build solid relationships with them corporately as well as personally. Establish these relationships on trust and communication, allowing the members of your team to feel like they can trust you and be open with you. This helps employees feel appreciated and feel like they are a part of something bigger than they are.
Coaches always have a solid game plan and are flexible under pressure. In order to be a successful coach, you have to be able to stay sharp and focused when the heat gets turned up, or when unexpected events occur. You have to be flexible and able to think clearly and quickly. A good coach always has a good game plan, but he is always able to switch that game plan if that's what it takes to help the team achieve victory.
If you train your mind to start thinking this way instead of thinking like a manager, you'll be well on your way to success. Always remember: There is a tremendous difference between team members wanting to do something as opposed to having to do something. Thinking like a coach will inspire a desire to want to do something.
